We have a lot in common with the two-dimensional world.
The limitations of the two-dimensional surface reflect our own limitations in the civilization in which we live. Because of social and economic restrictions, many people perceive life as a two-dimensional world. Visual art, painting and such, are two-dimensional. Yet the three-dimensional illusion created on the surface communicates with our own free-thinking desires and beliefs. The depth and the reality happen in the imagination.
The art object is an intimate companion to our life: our internal life, which is so personal and, for many of us, cannot be expressed or allowed to be expressed. In art, our mind can run free. The art accepts us readily and joyously, because the art itself is next to nothing without the perceptions of the human mind it receives. The collages are an attempt at a reorganization of the civilized world, taking fragments of reality out of context and reassembling them into a free form. The pictures side-step, or even ignore, the consumer-based world simulation, focusing instead on the natural world reality. Based on a give-and-take form of life, wherein the compositions have their own logic, as if you were looking at a landscape that designed itself. They are what they are. They have their own natural meanings and implications. The images are lifted and repositioned for their own reality: a comfortable relationship for themselves rather than what we might want. The idea being: give up yourself and let the images describe themselves as they would like to be described with their own composition, configuration and meaning.
My hope is for a liberation of the mind. Like opening a door and taking the mind for a walk. Perhaps we can broaden our perceptions of the world. When we come back, perhaps the world won’t be so confining. There is a great deal going on in life that we have been forced to turn away from because of functional constraints. Let’s open it up a bit. Take a look around, inside. Your mind creates your own scenarios as you go into the picture. Each individual understands something different from a picture, their life experiences being reflected in the image. In that sense, a picture is only the beginning. A picture receives as much as it gives. The continuous inner light and flowing information, radiating outward and flowing inward with the viewer. The forces stretch us out and into the form we take, both with the art and in our lives. We can live and breath within the art if we choose to. In a partnership with the mind, these forms walk and talk. They live within us. They live full lives as humans beings, as us.
The symbiotic relationship between 2D world and the brain, virtually a window that looks back. Or perhaps it is an eye that the artist sees into but the eye also looks back and looks into the artist, both searching and communicating; at first skeptical, then understanding. Then, proceeding with the process of creation as natural partners, watching, listening, agreeing, disagreeing. A decision-making unit that describes an emotional and intellectual understanding in a three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Abstract concept of reality realized, a non-verbal truth. No language is necessary or indeed adequate for the transferal of the information. The Art just is what it is. It just is.
