About selected series:
Chasing Light
Abstract pastel drawings on paper mounted on canvas. Ephemeral shapes floating across layers of colored light and lines. I was chasing sunlight, literally the light coming in through the glass brick on my drafting table continually forms amazing shapes that shift. I catalogue them as they change with the time of day, the weather and the seasons. This series was created from my catalogue of light shapes. “Light is the cosmic gift to every day...The source of all that lives. Energy from space. Bathing the world clean on its Universal journey. And the Sun is everywhere, as it's supposed to be. The chasing part is because the Sun is blocked, by door frames, awnings, porches and even windows... The light stops and is then released..." You can read more about the Chasing Light series in my Mar ‘14 newsletter http://eepurl.com/PrS5D.
Earthquake Proof
Abstract mixed media artwork on mounted on canvas, canvas board or plywood. Pastel, paint, tape, labels, cutouts on/in corrugated cardboard. Inspired by preparation for a solo exhibit at the 6th Street Container alternative art space in Miami in the summer of 2016 (ongoing thru mid-July by appt), I created these works by assembling and interacting with corrugated cardboard and/or other materials that are usually discarded. Here they become re-purposed/re-activated to a new and better existence by pastels, paints, cut-outs, and more. Enjoy listening to the original sound art piece “Exile, the Movie” created by Randy Nutt for the Opening exhibit of Earthquake Proof at 6th Street Container in Miami in June 2016, youtube video at https://youtu.be/Fv-8p-yPHWA.
The Humans
Abstract pastel drawings on paper mounted on canvas. Human forms/silhouettes embedded and interacting with larger forces, broad brush strokes, purposely empty areas, sometimes anchored by red dot reference points. We are both apart from and part of nature. We are both whole and fragmented. We are both powerful and overpowered. We know we are, but does that help?
Lost Angels
Abstract pastel drawings on paper mounted on canvas. Build-up of layers of rich blocks of color with a velvety luminosity emanating a lot of colored light and an undercurrent of movement. Created for a solo exhibit at the Notre Dame des Arts Chapel Gallery, in Ubbergen, the Netherlands. The idea of art in a chapel, a large space with abundant light, reverberating sound, stained glass intercepting the light from above, the meditative special effects of religious ceremony. The site was once a convent and a boarding school for girls, "Notre Dame des Anges." Behind the idea of the art is that humans have the potential to do great things (creatively and technically), but this may go unrealized as things get in the way. Nevertheless the internal, portable, positive energy of the individual, though dormant, can become awakened and a great source of happiness if it is allowed to be free. This is a personal matter.
Mirrors
Abstract pastel drawings on paper mounted on canvas. Light is reflected and refracted, grey that has so many transparent and translucent colored highlights. These are intimate pieces inspired by the idea of an art as an abstract mirror that reflects not just a physical image but a concept of self, a means of self-reflection, contemplative, framed and whimsical, each one encompasses different aspects of personality and thoughts. When you look at art as when you look at a mirror what you see depends upon you. Adjust a collar, smooth an eyebrow. If you're brave enough, you can look in. Mirrors don't reflect us, we reflect them. Enjoy seeing Mirrors at a meditative pace with an original electric bass soundtrack in a youtube video at https://youtu.be/3XCGwZfggMc.
Summer and Fall
Abstract pastel drawings on paper mounted on canvas. Large shapes of diverse forms and colors across quiet backgrounds. The transition from summer to fall is a time that juxtaposes the rapid luxuriant activity of the growing season with a slowing down, a shedding of parts, an onset of dormancy. Both are held in tension at the same moment. These eclectic works grew out of the “Chasing Light” series but they are much slower in pace, they have larger, diverse elements, more stasis. The time for exuberant, ephemerality is being left behind, frantic activity is being replaced by contemplation, distinct moments last longer.
